Two guys fishing

By Rev. Doug Goodwin

Two guys went fly fishing one Sunday afternoon, and like all their other fishing trips, got to talking theology. One guy, Don Sarton, then vice president of the Christian Church Foundation, suggested to Doug Goodwin, pastor of First Christian Church in Sheridan, Wy., that "we ought to invite men to come and fish with us and talk theology." So began the Theology/Fishing Retreat.

Arrangements were made at Bear Lodge Resort in the Bighorn Mountains of Northern Wyoming for a place to stay and hold theological conversations with fishing just a half mile down the road on the beautiful Tongue River. Dr. Vic Hunter, then pastor at Evergreen Christian Church in Colorado, agreed to serve as the guest leader.

The next year, Dr. Joe Bessler, professor of New Testament at Phillips Theological Seminary, agreed to come serve as guest leader. The next year, Dr. Rick Lowery, professor of Old Testament, agreed to come be the theology leader. Then, the next year, Dr. Gary Peluso, president of Phillips Theological Seminary, came to serve as our theological guide. Last year, Dr. Jon Berquist, president of Disciples Seminary Foundation, agreed to come be the guest leader.

This summer, we are looking forward to our sixth annual Theology/Fishing Retreat, August 4-8, in the Bighorn Mountains of Northern Wyoming with Dr. Ron Allen, professor at Christian Theological Seminary, serving as our guest leader.

The theological discussions are lively. The fly fishing fun (catch and release). The scenery at 8,000 feet, gorgeous! Accommodations at Bear Lodge Resort are in a condo and motel, or, if you choose to rough it at night, camping. We are limited to 15 men who enjoy fly fishing and talking theology. To learn more, please contact Doug Goodwin at pastordoug@sheridandisciples.org; or Don Sarton at airrambis@yahoo.com.

Honoring youth

With the spring comes a flood of graduations and other markers of adulthood. At Origin Christian Church in Spokane, Wash., two young women were honored with a "coming of age" ceremony. Both are very active in church life but do not attend traditional schools.

Youth leader Edie Rice-Sauer explains, "Across the world there are many different ceremonies. For some it indicates spiritual maturity, for some there is military service, for some it is a time when the youth becomes responsible for his or her own acts or words."

Rice-Sauer's young women were presented to the congregation as their mothers draped three threads across their shoulders - one to symbolize the debt to their teachers including Jesus, one to symbolize debt to parents and ancestors and a third to symbolize the continuing enrichment of the Holy Spirit. The ceremony closed with a laying on of hands and prayer.

Indianapolis general ministries moving, but not far

The Disciples general and racial / ethnic ministries located in Indianapolis are relocating their offices to the Landmark Center, 1099 N. Meridian St., in late August.

"We are excited about the opportunity to streamline our operations and increase collaboration among our general ministries located in Indianapolis," said Rev. Dr. Todd Adams, Associate General Minister and Vice President. Adams also stated, "We look forward to redesigned space that will better reflect how people work today."

Rev. Gary Kidwell, president of the Christian Church Foundation and chair for the Disciples building management group, said a space study conducted last year concluded the current building required more space than needed due to the building's configuration and efficiencies could be achieved with a different floor plan. The 22,000 sq. ft. reduction will save the church in excess of $3.2 million over the life of the lease.

"We're right-sizing general ministry offices for the future, being faithful stewards of the dollars entrusted to us for ministry," Kidwell said. "The opportunity for stronger partnerships and collaboration will benefit all expressions of the church." Read more

Mass incarceration conference held at NYC church

By Dr. Richard Sturm, regional elder for the Northeast Region of the Christian Church

On Saturday, March 22, 2014, a Conference on Mass Incarceration was held at Park Avenue Christian Church, in New York City. This congregation, affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ, was founded in 1810, and for over two centuries has been passionate about social justice.

The Conference informed people about the crisis of mass incarceration. Speakers and panelists represented a wide range of involvement in the field, from the former Chairman of the New York State Board of Parole, Robert Dennison, and the Community Health Advocate for the Coming Home Program of St. Luke's Hospital, to chaplains and church volunteers in ministry to/with the incarcerated.
